How the IndepAI FIRE calculator computes your FI Score
Your FI Score is a number out of 1,000, built from four weighted components. Here is what each one actually measures.
FI Progress
30%Compares your net worth to a target of 25 times your annual expenses, the same multiple most FIRE calculators use, on a curve that rewards early progress more than the last stretch.
Passive Income
30%Measures how much of your monthly expenses are already covered by dividends, rental income, or interest. Coverage caps out once it reaches 100%.
Savings Rate
20%Tracks the share of your income left after expenses. The score scales up to a 50% savings rate, then holds steady.
Geo Efficiency
20%Compares your cost of living to a global reference cost, so living somewhere cheaper than the median raises your score.
The four scores combine into your FI Score and a projected FI date. Move to a cheaper city or raise your savings rate, and both numbers move with you.

FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. It means building enough invested assets that your passive income covers your living expenses, so continuing to work becomes optional rather than required.
How does geo-arbitrage change my FI date? ▾
Moving to a lower cost-of-living country stretches the same income further. Lower expenses mean a lower FI number and a higher savings rate, and both pull your FI date closer.
Where does the city cost data come from? ▾
City cost-of-living figures come from Numbeo's crowdsourced database, layered onto our own dataset of 11,400+ cities and refreshed on an ongoing basis.
Is IndepAI free? ▾
Yes. Your FI Score, city comparisons, and core tracking are free. A paid Pro tier adds deeper tax modeling and the AI coach, and waitlist members get 50% off Pro for life.
